What they are

How cellular shades work

A cellular shade is made of pleated fabric folded into a row of honeycomb-shaped pockets. Those pockets trap a layer of air against the glass, which is what makes cellular shades one of the most energy-efficient window treatments you can buy. In winter they help hold heat in the room; in summer they slow the heat coming through a sunny window.

Because the fabric stacks into a slim bundle when raised, cellular shades keep a clean, uncluttered look and leave most of the window clear. Fabrics range from sheer light filtering, which softens daylight and keeps a room bright, to room darkening and blackout, which block most of the light for bedrooms and nurseries.

As a Hunter Douglas authorized dealer, we carry Duette® honeycomb shades, along with other cellular lines, so you can compare fabrics, colors and cell sizes side by side at your own windows.

  • Single-cell and double-cell honeycomb constructions
  • Light filtering, room darkening and blackout fabrics
  • Top-down/bottom-up styles for privacy with daylight

Where cellular shades work best

Cellular shades suit almost any room. These are the spots where homeowners love them most.

Bedrooms

Room darkening or blackout fabrics help with early sunrises and light from streetlights.

Living rooms

Light filtering fabrics soften glare on the TV while keeping the room bright.

Drafty or sunny windows

The honeycomb pockets help on cold north windows and hot west-facing ones.

Kids’ rooms & nurseries

Cordless lift systems remove dangling cords, and blackout fabrics help nap time.

Light control, privacy and comfort

What a cellular shade does for a room, window by window.

Soft light control

Choose how much light comes through, from a gentle glow to near total darkness.

Privacy

Top-down/bottom-up shades let you lower the top for daylight while the bottom stays covered.

Energy efficiency

Air trapped in the cells adds insulation at the glass, helping rooms stay comfortable.

UV protection

Shades filter sunlight that can fade floors, furniture and artwork over time.

Operating options & care

Cordless, motorized and easy to care for

Most cellular shades are ordered cordless: you simply push the bottom rail up or pull it down, and it stays where you leave it. For tall or hard-to-reach windows, motorization lets you raise and lower shades with a remote, an app or a schedule. Hunter Douglas PowerView® motorization is available on Duette® shades, and we program it when we install.

Care is simple. Dust with a feather duster or vacuum on low with a brush attachment, and spot clean gently with a damp cloth. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for your fabric, and call us if a shade ever stops working the way it should.

  • Cordless lift for a clean look and child safety
  • Motorized options, including PowerView®
  • Light dusting and gentle spot cleaning

Cellular shade questions

Answers to what Metro Detroit homeowners ask us most about honeycomb shades.

Are cellular shades worth it for energy savings?
Cellular shades are one of the most insulating window treatments because the honeycomb pockets trap air against the glass. How much you notice depends on your windows and how you use the shades, but most homeowners feel the difference at drafty or sunny windows.
What is the difference between single-cell and double-cell shades?
A double-cell shade has two layers of honeycomb pockets, which adds insulation and blocks a little more light. Single-cell shades are lighter and stack slightly smaller. We bring both so you can compare them.
Can cellular shades be room darkening?
Yes. Room darkening and blackout fabrics are a popular choice for bedrooms and nurseries. Some light can still show at the edges of an inside-mounted shade; we'll talk through mounting options at your windows.
Can I get cellular shades motorized?
Yes. Hunter Douglas Duette® shades can be motorized with PowerView®, which works with a remote, an app or a schedule. We install and program it for you.
How do I clean cellular shades?
Dust them regularly with a feather duster or a vacuum brush attachment on low. For small spots, dab gently with a damp cloth. Check the care instructions for your fabric before using anything stronger.
